Choosing a thermostat
A thermostat controls the AC by switching the compressor or fan-coil valve when room temperature crosses the set-point. The right choice depends on the system type: split units normally use their own remote control and rarely need a wall thermostat; ducted and fan-coil systems (villas, offices, hotel rooms) use a wall thermostat wired to the fan, valve or compressor contactor; chilled-water fan-coil units need a thermostat with fan-speed selection and valve output.
What to check
- Control voltage — 24 V AC (most ducted/fan-coil systems) or 220 V line voltage.
- Outputs — single-stage cool, cool + fan speeds, heat/cool, valve actuator.
- Display and programmability — simple dial, digital, or programmable/Wi-Fi.
- Compatibility with the existing wiring and base plate when replacing.
