BOTANVÈCopeland ZR vs ZP Compressors
ZR and ZP are the two Copeland scroll families UAE technicians deal with daily. The distinction is refrigerant: ZR compressors are designed for R22 (and R407C-type blends), ZP compressors for R410A. Because R410A runs at around 1.6 times the pressure of R22, the two families are engineered differently and are not interchangeable.

Can you convert from ZR to ZP?
Converting an existing R22 system to R410A (ZR to ZP) requires changing the compressor, expansion device, and flushing and recharging with POE oil — the copper lines can often be reused if they are the correct diameter and in good condition. This is a significant job and is typically only worthwhile if the rest of the system (coils, controls, piping) is in good condition. For most UAE maintenance scenarios, like-for-like replacement (ZR for ZR, ZP for ZP) is the standard approach.
Single-phase vs three-phase
Copeland ZR and ZP compressors are available in both single-phase (PFJ electrical code, 220–240 V) and three-phase (TFD, 380–420 V) variants. The single-phase range covers smaller capacities (typically up to about 5 HP); larger compressors are three-phase only. Check the existing unit's electrical supply before ordering a replacement — a three-phase compressor cannot be run on a single-phase supply. Can a ZP replace a ZR?
Only as part of a full conversion to R410A, which means the entire system — coils, expansion device, line set wall thickness, filter drier and oil — must be rated for R410A. In practice, that is a new unit. For an R22 system, replace ZR with ZR; for an R410A system, ZP with ZP.

- Match rated capacity (BTU/h or kW) to the original, not just the nominal number in the code.
- Match the electrical code (PFJ/PFZ single phase, TFD three phase) — see reading Copeland model numbers.
- Check suction/discharge connection sizes on the product page against your line set.
