BOTANVÈ1.5 Ton vs 2 Ton AC: Which Size Do You Need in the UAE?
In the UAE the answer is usually decided by room area and sun exposure: a 1.5-ton unit (18,000 BTU/h) suits rooms of roughly 14–20 m², a 2-ton unit (24,000 BTU/h) suits 20–27 m². Because summer design temperatures exceed 45 °C, UAE rules of thumb allow about 600–700 BTU/h per square metre — far more than the 400–500 BTU/h per m² quoted in European or North American guides.

Why not just buy the bigger one?
An oversized AC reaches set-point quickly and switches off before it has run long enough to dehumidify the air. In coastal Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi that means a cold but clammy room, condensation on grilles and more compressor starts (which is what wears compressors out). A 2-ton unit in a 15 m² bedroom is a common cause of the 'it's cold but sticky' complaint. Oversizing also costs more up front and draws more current on start-up.
When 2 ton is the right call
- Living rooms and majlis of 20 m² or more.
- Any room with a west- or south-facing glass wall.
- Rooms directly under an uninsulated roof (villa top floors, portacabins).
- Kitchens or rooms with several computers, a TV wall and 3+ regular occupants.
- Rooms with ceilings above 3.2 m.

A 2-ton unit typically draws 2.0–2.4 kW versus 1.5–1.8 kW for a 1.5-ton unit at full load. Over a UAE summer of 8–10 hours' daily use, the larger unit adds roughly 15–25% to that room's cooling electricity if it is oversized and cycling; correctly sized, the difference is smaller because the 1.5-ton unit runs longer.
