How AC copper pipe sizes are chosen
Split air conditioners connect the indoor and outdoor units with two copper lines: a small-diameter liquid line carrying high-pressure liquid refrigerant to the indoor coil, and a larger suction line returning low-pressure vapour to the compressor. Manufacturers fix the connection sizes for each capacity, and the table below shows the sizes most commonly specified on 1–5 ton residential and light-commercial units sold in the UAE. Always confirm against the nameplate or installation manual of the specific model, because some brands use the next size up or down.

Length, rise and R410A
Long pipe runs increase pressure drop in the suction line and reduce capacity; most residential units allow 15–25 m before the suction line must be upsized or extra refrigerant added per metre. Vertical rise between units is limited (commonly 10–15 m) and long risers may need oil traps so compressor oil returns properly. R410A operates at around 1.6 times the pressure of R22, so use refrigeration-grade (ACR) copper with the wall thickness the manufacturer specifies, and flare with an R410A-rated flaring tool. Insulate both lines in the UAE climate to prevent condensation and capacity loss.

What copper pipe size for a 1.5 ton split AC?
Most 1.5-ton units use a 1/4" liquid line and 1/2" suction line. Check the nameplate — a few models use 3/8" suction.
How much copper do I need?
Measure the one-way run, add about 1 m for bends and 5% allowance. Pancake coils come in 15 m (50 ft) lengths.
Can I use the same pipe for R410A and R22?
Use refrigeration-grade copper for both; R410A needs adequate wall thickness for its higher pressure and R410A-rated flare fittings.
Should both pipes be insulated?
In the UAE, yes — insulate both the suction and liquid lines to prevent sweating and heat gain from ambient temperatures above 40 °C.
