Choosing the right size for your AC unit
The liquid and suction line sizes are set by the AC unit manufacturer — they are not interchangeable between sizes. Most 1.5-ton split AC units use a 1/4" liquid line and 1/2" suction line; 2-ton units commonly use 1/4" and 5/8". See the full size chart in the copper pipe size guide or use the size helper tool.

Storing copper coils on site
Copper reacts with moisture and certain chemicals. Keep coil caps in place until you are ready to connect, and do not store open coils in areas with ammonia fumes, chlorine or high humidity. If a coil has been stored open for more than a few days, inspect the inner bore for discolouration before use. Light surface oxidation is normal and does not affect performance; green patina inside the bore is not normal and the coil should not be used for refrigeration lines.

How much copper do I need for a split AC installation?
The amount depends on the distance between the indoor and outdoor units. As a general guide, measure the pipe run, add about 1 m for bends and 5% as a working allowance. A 15 m (50 ft) pancake coil covers most residential runs of up to 12 m. For longer runs, two coils or a longer straight length may be needed. Tips for buying copper coil in the UAE
- Always buy refrigeration-grade (ACR) copper, not plumbing copper. ACR tube is cleaned and sealed at the factory to prevent moisture and contamination inside the pipe.
- R410A systems need thicker walls. R410A runs at around 1.6 times the pressure of R22, so confirm the wall thickness meets the equipment manufacturer's specification before purchasing.
- Insulate both lines. In the UAE climate, insulating both the suction and liquid lines prevents sweating, reduces heat gain and protects capacity.
- Use the right flaring tool. R410A systems require an R410A-rated flaring tool and flare nuts to maintain a gas-tight joint at the connections.
- Buy bulk for projects. If you are fitting out several units, upload your coil schedule for a consolidated quotation on quantity.
