How much copper do you need?
Measure the one-way pipe run from the indoor to the outdoor unit, add 1 metre for bends and connections, then add 5% as a waste allowance. Pancake coils from BOTANVÈ come in 15-metre (50 ft) lengths. For a typical UAE apartment installation with a 5–8 m pipe run, one coil of each required diameter is usually sufficient. For longer runs or multiple units on the same project, calculate each circuit separately.

Cutting and bending copper coil
Use a pipe cutter (not a hacksaw) to cut copper tube — a hacksaw leaves burrs and copper filings that can damage the compressor if they enter the refrigerant circuit. Deburr the cut end with a reamer before flaring or brazing. Bend copper using a spring bender or pipe bender sized for the tube diameter; bending by hand creates oval cross-sections that restrict flow. For tight bends, heat the copper slightly with a torch to reduce spring-back, then allow it to cool before handling.

What affects the price
- Copper market price. Coil prices follow the London Metal Exchange copper price with a lag of a few weeks.
- Diameter and wall thickness. Larger diameter and thicker wall = more copper per metre. 'Economical' ranges use a lighter wall suitable for typical residential R410A pressures; confirm wall thickness for high-pressure or long runs.
- Brand and standard. Maksal and Mueller tubes are manufactured to ACR standards (ASTM B280 bore cleanliness for Maksal, per the product page). Unbranded coil may not be.
How much to buy
