BOTANVÈR22 vs R410A: Key Differences
R22 and R410A are the two refrigerants UAE technicians handle most, and they are not interchangeable in any way. R410A runs at roughly 1.6 times the pressure of R22, uses different oil, and requires different compressors, gauges and copper wall thickness. This article sets out the practical differences.

Charging differences between R22 and R410A systems
R410A operates at approximately 1.6 times the pressure of R22, which means the service equipment — manifold gauges, hoses and recovery machines — must be rated for R410A. Charging an R410A system uses subcooling as the primary method (target typically 5–12 K depending on the unit); R22 fixed-orifice systems are charged to a target superheat from the manufacturer's chart. Never mix R22 and R410A in a system — the lubricating oils are incompatible (mineral oil for R22, POE oil for R410A) and the pressures are fundamentally different. If you are converting a building from R22 to R410A systems, the old copper lines can often be reused if they are clean and the correct diameter, but the compressor, expansion device and oil must all be changed.
R22 availability in the UAE
R22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) controlled under the Montreal Protocol. The UAE follows a phase-down schedule, and R22 is currently available for servicing existing equipment but is not used in new installations. Why they can't be mixed
Mixing even a small amount of R410A into an R22 system pushes pressures beyond the design limits of the compressor and lines; mixing R22 into R410A dilutes the blend and contaminates POE oil with chloride. Either way the compressor is at risk. Recover completely before changing refrigerant, and only change refrigerant when the compressor, oil and components are rated for it.
Service implications
- Use an R410A-rated manifold gauge set (800 psi high side) and hoses.
- R410A copper joints must be brazed with nitrogen purge; flare with an R410A-rated tool and use R410A flare nuts. See the copper pipe helper.
- Charge R410A as liquid to keep the R32/R125 ratio; use subcooling or superheat to verify.
- POE oil is hygroscopic — keep the system open for the shortest possible time and pull a deep vacuum (500 microns or better).
