How to Read a Copeland Compressor Model Number
A Copeland scroll model number such as ZR42K3E-TFD-522 packs the series, nominal capacity, design generation, voltage/phase and bill of materials into one code. Reading it correctly is the difference between ordering the right replacement first time and receiving a compressor with the wrong voltage or fittings.
Anatomy of the code: ZR42K3E-TFD-522
| Segment | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Family | ZR / ZP / ZB / ZF | ZR = scroll for R22/R407C-type AC; ZP = scroll optimised for R410A; ZB = medium-temp refrigeration; ZF = low-temp refrigeration |
| Nominal capacity | 42 | Approximate capacity in thousands of BTU/h at ARI conditions (42 ≈ 42,000 BTU/h nominal; catalogue rating 35,000 BTU/h for ZR42K3E) |
| Generation / design | K3E, KC, KCE, K5E, KSE | Design generation and refinements; newer letters generally indicate later designs |
| Electrical code | PFJ, PFZ, TFD, TF5 | PFJ/PFZ = 220–240 V, 1 phase, 50 Hz; TFD = 380–420 V, 3 phase, 50 Hz; TF5 = 200–230 V 3 phase |
| Bill of materials | 522, 622, 422 | Fittings (brazed/rotalock), oil type/charge, protection module; must match the original for a drop-in replacement |
Oil type and charge
The Copeland model number does not directly encode the oil type, but the refrigerant designation does. ZR compressors (R22/R407C-type) use mineral oil or alkylbenzene (AB) oil; ZP compressors (R410A) require POE (polyolester) oil. Never use mineral oil in an R410A system — it does not mix with R410A and will cause compressor failure. The bill-of-materials suffix (e.g. -522 or -622) includes information about the oil charge volume — refer to the Copeland data plate or product datasheet for the specific charge.
Finding a replacement model
If you have the nameplate of a failed compressor, photograph all visible text — especially the model number, serial number, voltage, refrigerant and oil type — before removing it from the system. Send the photo to BOTANVÈ on WhatsApp (+971 50 814 6571) and we will identify the direct replacement or the closest current equivalent. Some older ZR models have been superseded by ZP equivalents in the same capacity bracket if the system refrigerant has been converted.
BOTANVÈ stocks Copeland ZR and ZP scroll compressors from 3 to 15 HP, single-phase and three-phase. View the full Copeland range or request a bulk quotation for project quantities.
Worked examples from the BOTANVÈ catalogue
- ZR42K3E-PFJ 220/240/50/1 — ZR family, 3.5 HP, K3E generation, single-phase 220–240 V. Product page.
- ZR42K3E TFD 3PH — same compressor in three-phase 380–420 V. Product page.
- ZP61KCE-TFD-522 — ZP family for R410A, 5 HP, KCE generation, three-phase, BOM 522. Product page.
- ZR144KCE-TFD 380/420/50/3 — ZR family, 12 HP, three-phase. Product page.
Common mistakes
- Ordering PFJ (single phase) for a TFD (three phase) unit or vice versa — always check the supply at the outdoor unit.
- Assuming a ZP will replace a ZR because the capacity number matches — the refrigerant is different.
- Ignoring the BOM suffix when the original had rotalock fittings.
- Reading the nominal capacity number as the catalogue rating; the rated capacity on the product page is the figure to compare.
When in doubt, send a nameplate photo on WhatsApp; identification is free.
Frequently asked questions
What does TFD mean on a Copeland compressor?
TFD is the electrical code for 380–420 V, three-phase, 50 Hz.
What does PFJ mean?
PFJ is 220–240 V, single-phase, 50 Hz. PFZ is a related single-phase code used on some newer models.
What is the difference between ZR42K3E and ZR42KCE?
Same family and capacity; KCE is a later design generation. They are generally interchangeable in application but confirm electrical code and fittings.
What does the 522 suffix mean?
It is the bill-of-materials code defining fittings, oil charge and accessories; match it to the original where possible.
